Who is the Paternity Leave ‘Pioneer’?
Am I the first guy to take paternity leave?
The first guy to take an extended paternity leave?
But I am one of the first. Here in 2017 few companies allow extended paternity leave. Even fewer men take any meaningful time off for their family.
Sure Zuckerberg did it, and the world crumbled at his knees. Don’t get me wrong, what he did is great, but I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that you don’t have $60 billion dollars. Your situation might be a little different – say $60 billion different. That’s not a number made up for effect by the way; he’s actually worth that much.
Therein lies the problem. There just aren’t resources outside of sporadic articles about billionaires and crap HR guides on how to navigate paternity leave effectively. People aren’t talking about it in a realistic way.
As one of the most generic human beings alive, I accept that as a challenge. As someone who has successfully navigated not one, but two long paternity leaves, I want to share what I learned. My hope is that through my failings and discoveries, you can avoid some pitfalls and really deliver on your promise to be a good dad and family man.
Why a Website?
Taking paternity leave is something that added a ton of value to my life. I believe it can do the same for you. My goal with this website is simple:
I am committed to sharing what I learned to help you get the most out of your leave.
The things that make us feel most alive are growing and giving. Being a Dad is probably the best opportunity we have to do both of those things. It is vitally important that we start that journey off on the right foot. Paternity leave enables us to do that, but only if we take it, and only if we do it the right way.
This website is my best effort at enabling YOU to do just that. To work through the fears of taking time away from work and the inaccurate belief that your career will suffer from a few weeks with your family.
I want to share what I have learned to show that it can not only be done, but be done effectively. With a little bit of thought and diligence up front, you can rest assured that your reputation won’t be damaged and you won’t have t make up for ‘lost’ time.
Your job may never enable you to grow and give, but becoming a dad will. It will create new purpose and a new level of focus in your life. Get it started right, for your kids sake!
I went to college, had a great time, did pretty well grade wise & met my future wife while working part time at a YMCA. I’d call that a successful use of 4 years and a boat load of cash.
Landed a job in the finance industry at one of the largest banks in the world straight out of school. Of course this was in 2008, just in time for the worst financial crisis since 1929. Somehow I survived thanks to some lucky corporate budget timing. Basically it’s a classic cubicle desk job. Worked my @$$ off and moved up a few rungs on the corporate ladder in my 20s while burning some prime nights stuck at school for my MBA – on their dime though, thank you very much 🙂
Best decision I ever made. My partner in crime is now officially on retainer! You know that saying ‘behind every good man there is a good woman’? Well I’m pretty sure that’s sexist and you shouldn’t say it anymore. That being said, my wife is right beside me through all of this and it’s a hell of a lot of fun that way. If you don’t have a wife, I highly recommend it. Two thumbs up.
My daughter was born in 2014 & my life was changed forever. Yes, your life changes and yes, that’s a good thing. You’ll love it if you haven’t already started the Dad gig. I took some, not all, of the paternity leave available to me and made many mistakes. This was my ‘learning’ experience.
When my son arrived I decided to take a full 4 months of paternity leave. I was determined to take a significant amount of time without sidelining or wrecking my career. How? Easy. I laid the groundwork, started early, and negotiated the right arrangement. No mistakes this time around!
